Bobbie Gray

Spanning a range of disciplines; including sculpture, moving image, painting and installation, my practice explores the potential of found organic and recycled materials as a means for art making, highlighting the problematic aspects of environmental issues such as  the current modes of production and consumption.

My work is a celebration of nature, and by using light as a tool for transforming the synthetic materials, it aims to inspire viewers and take them on a journey through a reinvented botanical landscapes. My approach is often a repetitive and meditative process and I enjoy a collaborative approach.

I am currently working on Kowhai Grove;  a suspended, permanent site-specific installation commissioned by Tauranga City Council. The work is made of thousands of Kowhai flowers made from plastic recyclables in collaboration with the Bay of Plenty community, illuminated by programmable LEDs to create an immersive, responsive light installation that will eventually take over an entire downtown laneway.
